Lee Hyori and Shinhwa Stand at the Top 'Who Said We Were Too Old?'

Last week was a memorable moment for Lee Hyori and Shinhwa, 15-year veterans who have all been there and done that. Often poked fun at and jested due to their old age, the artists who debuted in the late 1990s as youngsters have returned to the stage after long breaks last month. To the surprise of many, but perhaps none to themselves, Lee Hyori and Shinhwa took home all five trophies at TV music programs currently employing the ranking system.

All in their mid-thirties, Lee Hyori and members of Shinhwa competed against the new faces of K-pop that now represent what the 15-year veterans used to own and came out on top. Coupled with Jo Yong Pil's unbelievable return to stage after his 10-year hiatus, this accomplishment by the 'oldies' is an amazing feat that sheds light on the loyalty of their fans as well as their constant effort to improve and stay relevant.

For a variety of reasons, many popular artists who used to reign the 90s and early 2000s have faded into the shades of anonymity or, worse yet, unfortunate scandals. Lee Hyori and Shinhwa endured through creeping complacency and temptations to sit and relax, as they continued to pursue what they loved to do. So we applaud at their self-development and self-control and thank them for the memories, old and new. Certainly, artists like them do not come around often.
