The list of Hollywood stars to visit Korea has never been as long and star-studded as 2013.

Even just a few years ago, there was an average of three visits per year by the top stars from Hollywood. This year, it has been nearly every week.

Of course, the visits are always for movie promotions and professional reasons. But the negative correlation between celebrity visits and the outcome of their movies' Box Office records in Korea has been absurdly high that there are rumors of a perceivable, real jinx that exists in the movie industry in Korea.

So why the numerous visits by stars like Leonardo Dicaprio, Tom Cruise, Will Smith and the likes? Simply, the Korean movie industry has grown rapidly in the last decade, with over 100 million total movie tickets sold last year. Plus, Hollywood movies typically fare well in Korea, prompting the visits of the American celebrities.

Roland Emmerich, the director of 'White House Down,' commented during an interview, "The Korean film market is quite unique. It has a very high satisfaction with its domestic movies. For that reason, Hollywood stars used to visit Japan and Hong Kong. But nowadays, they make sure to visit Korea."

It is certainly good news that the Korean film market has grown large enough to prompt big-name stars to pay a visit to Korea. At the same time, however, domestic films need to continue to improve and ensure their competitiveness against the fierce territorial fight against Hollywood blockbusters.

Like Roland Emmerich said, Korean moviegoers embrace domestic film. On the flip side, however, they often turn a cold shoulder to foreign productions. Just by listening in on an interview with a visiting Hollywood star reveals how narcissistic the Korean media may appear to the visitors when the majority of interview questions revolve around Psy, not the stars themselves.

There are much improvements to be made on red carpet events that put together a seemingly random Korean celebrity with the Hollywood visitor and create an awkward scene filled with silence and nervous laughter.
