Pokemon X And Y, Super Smash Bros. Crossover: Mewtwo's Return To Prominence [VIDEO]

With Pokemon X and Pokemon Y set to release October 12 and Super Smash Bros. ready to make its Wii U entry, one particular Pokemon is bringing a lot of buzz to the table: Mewtwo.

During a recent E3 panel with The Pokemon Company CEO Tsunekazu Ishihara and Game Freak director Junichi Masuda, a question was raised whether the legendary Pokemon was being considered for Super Smash Bros.

"We are thinking about it," shouted Super Smash Bros. creator Masahiro Sakurai from the audience.

According to Nintendo Insider, Mewtwo's recent return to prominence is in part thanks to a new form being used in Pokemon X and Y, as well as the newest Pokemon movie set to premiere next month, "ExtremeSpeed Genesect: Mewtwo Awakens."

In choosing playable characters for Super Smash Bros., Sakurai admitted to the stress of figuring out who to include and who to exclude.

"The amount of stress I feel, it's almost to the brink of death because it's not just a matter of me personally thinking this character or that character is going to be in the game; it's that we also have the game balance, animation, graphics and sound to think about in order to make that character fully fleshed out in that universe," said the 42-year-old game creator to Polygon.

"I have to think about all of that when I go through this decision-making process."

Super Smash Bros. recently introduced the Wii Fit Trainer, Mega Man, and The Villager from Animal Crossing to its upcoming roster, both new additions.

With a special crossover between Special Smash Bros. and Pokemon, it would seem having Mewtwo back makes the most logical sense.

"Well first of all, we talk with The Pokemon Company," explained Sakurai in Pokemon selection for his games to Now Gamer. "What's the hot Pokemon? What Pokemon are in the movies right now? And really do a lot of research on that front."

"For example, X and Y are coming out. Of course, we haven't done any market research because they're not out yet, but we look at the animated series or movies and anything like that and again, find out which ones are going to be central to any of conversations in Pokemon going forward."

"But it's not just that. Going back to just what we talked about, what's unique about them? Where do they fit in with the rest of everything else? What do they have? It's a combination of those things."
