Pokemon X And Y Download Content: Dream 3DS DLC, And Is This Nintendo's Solution To Backwards Compatibility?

As Pokemon X and Pokemon Y gets ready for their October 12 release, fans are clamoring over the possibility of downloadable content for the 3DS release, although it hasn't entirely been positive.

Earlier at the E3 Expo, a special Pokemon roundtable with The Pokemon Company CEO Tsunekazu Ishihara and Game Freak director Junichi Masuda revealed that they are considering DLC for Pokemon X and Y, but nothing has been cemented.

"I'll hope is just pure aesthetic, not like 'buy DLC to unlock Pokemon or Key Item X'. That'll be a load of bull," writes a Pokecommunity contributor, Shengar.

"I don't have problem with cosmetic DLC. Just stay away from gameplay changing DLC."

Traditionally, DLCs include fun additions like costume changes (changing looks is a new detail added to Pokemon X and Y) or new gameplay areas, but perhaps something like introducing a few new Pokemon in a later DLC might be commercially viable.

Moreover, having a DLC to introduce older generation Pokemon might very well be Nintendo's way of solving the backwards compatibility problem.

As noted by IGN, importing Pokemon from previous titles is tricky because the DS and 3DS do not communicate directly.

And while a solution might still present itself in the coming months, Pokemon X and Y could at least satiate fans by doling out DLC with new areas or ways of capturing original Pokemon, especially since first-generations like Pikachu and Mewtwo have already been shown to exist in the sixth-generation Pokedex.

For now, fans will have to speculate a little longer.

What do you want a DLC for Pokemon to include?
