South Korean singer Baek Ji Young suffered a miscarriage on Thursday morning.

The 37-year-old pop star was hospitalized on Wednesday, according to the publication CJ E&M enewsWorld.

"Yesterday, Baek Ji Young said she wasn′t feeling well and that her stomach hurt, so we rushed her to the hospital," a representative from Baek's record label WS Entertainment said in an official statement.

"She however, lost her child at about 10 a.m. this morning. She is in ill health due to the surgery, and she′s resting at the hospital. Her family has been trying to comfort her by her side."

Baek was reportedly in the fifth month of her pregnancy. Her and her husband, 28-year-old actor Jung Seok Won, were married on June 1.

"She and Jung had looked forward to the child so much," an anonymous WS Entertainment employee told the publication Tenasia.

A source identified as "an official," told the website Soompi that Baek's miscarriage took everyone by surprise.

"It was said that Baek Ji Young should be in a stable condition in the pregnancy after the end of this month, but I can't believe that this happened," the source said.

At the couples wedding, Jung had expressed the couple's desire to have several children.

"Baek Ji Young and I both come from families of three children, so we're also thinking about having three children of our own," he said.

Back in May, when Baek announced she was pregnant, she took extra care to make sure that her fame didn't affect the health of her unborn child, a WS Entertainment spokesperson told the Chosun Ilbo.

"Baek Ji-young, is expecting a baby in fall," the spokesperson said back in May.

"As Baek is now in the early stages of pregnancy, she is being very careful about taking care of her health and making quiet trips to hospital [to avoid the media and fans]."

Rising to prominence in the Korean dance scene in the late 1990s, Baek was one of the first K-pop artists to utilize Latin rhythms in her music, yet she eventually came to be known primarily as a ballad singer.

Back in 2009, the singer mused on the different phases of her career,

"When my debut album was released, I stressed the visual side as a dance music singer," Baek said.

"Then I took an inevitable break for a few years, and after my absence, I started to sing ballads. I really want to be able to sing different kinds of songs so that I can be a singer for a long time."
