Pharrell 'Get Lucky': Will.i.am Tweets He Is Not Suing Robin Thicke's "Blurred Lines" Buddy For 'I am' Trademark

After reports surfaced the musician and The Voice coach Will.i.am is suing "Get Lucky" vocalist Pharrell Williams for his "I am" trademark, The "Scream and Shout" hit maker denied the claims via Twitter. Instead he alleges that he is busy being a good humanitarian.

Ken Hertz, Will.i.am's lawyer released a statement to Newsbeat that seconded his clients tweet and assuring that the situation is merely a disagreement. "Will.i.am is not suing Pharrell Williams," said Hertz. "What Will.i.am has done is what any trademark owner must do to protect and maintain a trademark. This is a run-of-the-mill trademark dispute that has been going on since late last year." The lawyer continued standing up for the "Black Eyed Pea" member by emphasizing that the artist is trying to avoid the demise of his trademark. "In order to avoid weakening or losing his trademark, will.i.am has an obligation under trademark law to monitor and defend his trademarks against confusingly similar marks. Will.i.am has registered several trademarks, including 'I AM', which is also emphasized in, and a significant element of, his professional name." Wednesday, Rolling Stone, came across legal documents from Will.i.am that claim Pharrell Williams' new creative brand named "i am OTHER" is to similar to his copyright phrase "I AM." Pharrell and his people happen to disagree. The co-producer of Robin Thicke's top-charting "Blurred Lines" rebutted making a play on words with the trademark "I Am." "I Am disappointed that Will, a fellow artist, would file a case against me," Pharrell says in a statement. "I Am someone who likes to talk things out and, in fact, I attempted to do just that on many occasions. I Am surprised in how this is being handled and I Am confident that Will's trademark claims will ultimately be found to be as meritless and as I do." In the meantime, Pharrell continues to advertise his brand.
