3 Korean-American Singers You Should Know

In honor of the 4th of July, we thought it might be a good idea to give credit to singers who are both Korean and American and celebrate their music and differences.

The following three singers are diverse and interesting with their own unique styles - much like the K-Pop fan community around the world.

If you haven't already heard of them, you might be surprised. But give them a listen and tell us what you think!

Priscilla Ahn

Priscilla Ahn is a Korean-American folk singer who, at the age of 29, has already had a long and successful career.

Her parents met and married in South Korea while her father was stationed there during his military service.

When Priscilla decided to pursue her music career, she adopted her mother's last name and moved to Los Angeles.

She made her official debut in 2003 and is currently signed to famed American label Blue Note.

While Ahn describes her Korean language skills as "basic" she has had a decent amount of success in her motherland having promoted and played concerts and at festivals in the country.

She has released four studio albums and three EPs.

Amerie

Amerie is Korean-African American, even if it is hard to detect her Asian heritage at first glance.

Like Priscilla Ahn, her mother is Korean and her father served in the military.

While she was born in the US, soon afterwards her family moved to South Korea where she spent her early childhood. Korean is her first language.

Because of her father's job, she moved around a lot and spent time in a variety of countries.

She debuted in 2001 as an R&B singer and was originally signed to the major label Columbia Records. She is now under Island Def Jam and is currently working on an EP of self-written sounds.

Her fifth studio album includes a variety of collaborations with other well-known artists including Korean-American rapper Tiger JK.

Because of her unique background, Amerie's music has been described as having a very distinctive sound.

Eric Nam

Eric Nam is the only one on the list who is actively involved in the K-Pop industry.

Born and raised in Atlanta, Georgia, Nam was interested in music from a young age. In high school, he self-released a CD as a school project and it was a huge hit among his classmates.

One of his cover songs was discovered on YouTube in 2011 by the South Korean broadcasting company MBC, and soon after he appeared on Birth of a Great Star 2.

Last year, Nam joined the Korean label B2M Entertainment and has slowly but surely been gaining popularity throughout the country since his official solo debut earlier this year.

Impressively, he can also speak Korean, English, Spanish and Chinese and is currently learning Japanese.
