Kanye West New Album "Yeezus" Sales Fall [VIDEO]; Less Than Half A Million Units Sold; Did Jay Z New Album Magna Carta Holy Grail Steal His Thunder?

Even though Kanye West's New Album Yeezus debuted at Number One on the Billboard Charts, it sold only 327,000 units that week, lowest first week sales since his debut album "The College Dropout".

Sales for Kanye West's new album Yeezus have dropped further still in the fourth week after the album's release.   This week, it sold only 29,000 units.  It has steadily dropped in its second and third weeks.  The total number of units sold of Kanye West's new album Yeezus is just under 460,000.

In contrast, Jay Z's New album Magna Carta Holy Grail sold over 1 million units the first week.  Of course, Jay Z used an app promotional strategy and had Samsung buy 1 million units for pre-release, generating an impressive first week for himself.

Some people feel that Kanye West's new album Yeezus does not live up to critical hype, causing loss of interest.  Others say that the album's sound is less mainstream, and point to the promotional strategy.  Kanye West did not promote his new album Yeezus with a single or video before the release of the album.

Jay Z has also used some decidedly non-mainstream tactics to promote his new album Magna Carta Holy Grail, doing a performance art piece at Pace Gallery of his song Picasso Baby with artist Marina Abramovic.

According to the Electronic Urban Report, not everyone thinks this is a big problem .  Editor of Billboard Joe Levy says the album is performing well even though it has lacked traditional promotion: "With almost absolutely no promotion and certainly nothing traditionally defined as album release promotion, no single, no video, no magazine covers. ... This is a fan reaction based purely on interest and anticipation.  I think given the way he's approached this release, he's doing quite well."

Fatih Newman, an A&R Executive, says: "It's like the difference between making an art piece and something that's just driving for commercial success, and I think he's at a level of celebrity where he can do that, and the next record he can come back and have an album with five singles on it if he chooses to.  He's just in a different class of artists."
