Zonkey Born In Italy: Zebra- Donkey Lovechild, More Adorable Than Either [VIDEO]

A zonkey was just born...and it's adorable.

The little critter is part zebra, part donkey. It was born in Italy and named Ippo, the Italian word for hippo (just to give it more of an identity complex).

Ippo the zonkey is the foal of a male zebra and female donkey. It was born at an animal reserve in Florence, Italy.

Ippo's zebra dad was adopted by the reserve after he was rescued from a zoo. Ippos' donkey mom is actually an endangered species, a Donkey of Amiata. The two were separated by a fence...but that couldn't hold their love back.

The intrepid zebra climbed over the fence to woo his donkey love and they mated, forming little Ippo the zonkey.

Serena Aglietti from the reserve said that "Ippo is the only one of her kind in Italy." There are a few other zonkeys, or zedonks, in the world. One is in Georgia at the Chestatee Wildlife Preserve. It was born in 2010.

Because zebras and donkeys are, obviously, different species, their genes are, well, a bit funky. Zonkeys aren't usually able to make their own offspring, although they are otherwise healthy physically.

"It's similar to when a female horse and a male donkey mate and give birth to a mule," said Robert Benson, a vetenarian who has worked with exotic animals, incldugin the zedonk/zonkey in Georgia. Mules are generally sterile.

However, zonkeys still have a libido. "The female still cycles and comes into heat," said Benson. "They can go through the motions and they have the parts. They just don't reproduce."
