Oscar Pistorius Trial Date: Double-Amputee Athlete Goes Kayaking With Friends As Court Date Nears For Murder Case, Indictment Expected

Oscar Pistorius’s trial date on August 19 is just 5 days away. He is due to appear at a South African court for shooting his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp last Valentine’s Day.

Though some may think that a man charged for murder with a nearing court date is busy and anxious preparing for his case, Oscar Pistorius was spotted “relaxed” and kayaking with friends a week before his appearance, reported the Daily Mail.

The sprinter, world-renowned for his moniker “Blade Runner,” was seen with three male friends off the coast of Hermanus, South Africa, on Sunday.

The revelation came after South African police announced they have finished their investigation into the case, according to the Daily Mail.

Oscar Pistorius is expected to be formally charged with murder for killing his girlfriend and a trial date could be officially set on August 19. That day would have been Reeva Steenkamp’s 30th birthday if she were alive.

Prosecutors on the case have announced that they have concluded the investigation into the death of his girlfriend.

The Olympian and Paralympian was spotted by a Brown du Plessis, 25, who was walking with his wife around the Old Harbour.

Du Plessis said that Oscar “was standing next to a kayak with three of his friends.” When he saw the prosthetic legs, he looked up and thought, “Oh, it’s Pistorius.”

“I had my camera with me so I quickly took a few photographs. It was totally by chance,” claimed du Plessis.

He said that by the looks of Oscar, “you wouldn’t think it was the same person you saw in the courtroom.”

The casual observer said that there were about a dozen other people around at the time but that none “paid much attention” to Pistorius.

“He looked like a totally different person,” added du Plessis, who described the moment as “surreal,” noted the Daily Mail.

The Daily Mail also reported that according to Arnold Pistorius, Oscar’s uncle where he has been living since being bailed from jail, the athlete was in Hermanus visiting a family friend’s mother – who is terminally ill.

Oscar Pistorius Trial Twitter Account

The media sensationalism on the case gets a social media twist, now that a dedicated Twitter account focused on Oscar Pistorius murder case is active and live on the information network.

Twitter user, @OscarTrial has 2,857 followers and in its bio it says, “Oscar Pistorius has been granted bail and now awaiting trial. Tweets are retweets of journalists as well as analysis.”

“Any questions please tweet @OscarTrial,” it added.

The last tweet from the account was a retweet from Sky News reporter Alex Crawford’s account. “#OscarPistorius on Monday OP will appear in court in Pretoria. Its expected he’ll be served with an indictment,” was the message in the tweet dated August 13.

Magistrate warns against “trial by media” of Paralympian

Last June during the athlete’s most recent court appearance, a South African magistrate said that Oscar Pistorius should not face “trial by media.”

Magistrate Daniel Thulare used the opportunity during that time to criticized the media, including those overseas, according to The Guardian. He said that they are threatening the “fountains of justice” and sanctity of South Africa’s courts.

“It would appear there is somewhat a trial by the media houses of Mr Pistorius,” Thulare said.

“It would appear some of the activities may amount, if not to scandalising the court system in the republic, then to contempt of court.”

The intense coverage of the case after the 26-year-old runner was charged with murdering his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp in February caught the world by surprise. Since then, both local and international media have provided laser-like coverage on the case with rumors that large sums of money are offered by prominent publications for materials regarding the story.
