Does Crayon Pop Have What It Takes To Follow In Psy's Footsteps?

With the release of their single "Bar Bar Bar" and the accompanying quirky music video of the members bopping up and down in helmets, Crayon Pop has hit the viral mainstream in the US.

Earlier in the week it was announced that the group's agency, Chrome Entertainment, had signed a partnership with Sony Music Korea to help the girl group in their international promotions.

Fast-forward a couple days and Billboard hinted at the possibility of the group following in Psy's footsteps.

A catchy pop song with a silly, but easily imitated dance move? Sure sounds like "Gangnam Style" - but there are some pretty significant differences.

While "Gangnam Style" may have been Psy's break out international hit, he already had a long-established career before smashing YouTube records. An accomplished composer and lyricist, Psy had been hard at work in the Korean music scene since the Crayon Pop gals were rugrats.

Crayon Pop only debuted as a group last year, and "Bar Bar Bar" is their first single to even chart. They were widely unknown even in their home country before the release of this single, and as some critics suggest, do not have the clout to make the success last.

Couple that with the fact that they are not actually very talented singers and there is nothing very profound about their music, and it seems unlikely that Crayon Pop will be the next big K-Pop act to break the US mainstream.

Sure they are cute. Yeah the video is adorable. And you are right, it is quite different from anything we have really seen before. But those are the elements that make a viral hit, not the building blocks for a long and successful career.

So while for the time being the Crayon Pop girls should enjoy their new found fame and attention - even milk it for all it's worth - they probably shouldn't get too used to it.
