Nothing is set in stone yet, Dakota Johnson is only one of the names being put forward to play the young student in “50 Shades of Grey.” This choice for the role of Anastasia Steele give some indications of what the producers of “50 Shades of Grey” are looking for: Dakota Steele isn’t a movie star yet, but her career is on the rise, she’s only 23 years old, which is about the age of Anastasia Steele and she has acting cred.
Representatives for Dakota Johnson and the “50 Shades of Grey” studio, Universal, had no comment.
Sam Taylor-Johnson, who directed "Nowhere Boy,” will be sitting in the “50 Shades of Grey” director’s chair. The screenplay for the movie adaptation of “Fifty Shades of Grey” was written by Kelly Marcel, who penned "Saving Mr. Banks." The film version of the erotic literary sensation by E L James will be produced by Michael De Luca and Dana Brunetti. "Fifty Shades of Grey" is a Universal Pictures and Focus Features film.
Whoever gets the part of Anastasia Steele in “Fifty Shades of Grey” will almost certainly become an A-list star. Whoever plays the role will have to be comfortable in their own skin because the role calls for onscreen nudity and scenes of kinky sex. As a former model, Dakota Johnson is already at ease showing her body in front of the camera.
No roles in “Fifty Shades of Grey" have been officially offered to any actors. According to individuals familiar with the project, some actresses have already taken themselves out of the running, like Shailene Woodley and Alicia Vikander. “Fifty Shades of Grey” casting agents did consider Analeigh Tipton, who starred in "Crazy, Stupid Love." Tipton is a young model who is starting her career in acting, just like Dakota Johnson.
“Fifty Shades of Grey” E L James described Anastasia Steele as an average 22-year-old with delicate features, pale skin, big blue eyes, full lips and an upturned nose. The character has long, dark brown hair. Dakota Johnson is a natural blonde, but has gone brunette before. Ana Steele is slender and petite, pretty, but not too pretty.
Hollywood first noticed Dakota Johnson in "The Social Network," especially the scene where she slept with Justin Timberlake's character. "The Social Network" was also produced by De Luca and Brunetti. Another actress who had a bit part in "The Social Network" who was rumored for the role of Anastasia Steele was Rooney Mara, who played Lisbeth Salander in "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo."
Universal is expected to release an official casting announcement for “Fifty Shades of Grey” after Labor Day.
