Review: Lee Hyori Steals The Show (And The Guns) In The Colorful New Honey-G Video 'My Love' [VIDEO]

Music critics reviewing K-pop outside of South Korea often reference the so-called cartoonish image of the genre, boy bands and girl groups with Anime-like symmetry.

The adjective certainly doesn't apply across the wide musical spectrum of acts considered K-pop, yet there does seem to be an illustrated look common in many of the idiom's big budget green screen videos, achieved with varying degrees of success.

One sparkling example of how cartoonish, comic book visuals can be a striking when used creatively is the new music video "My Love" from former "Superstar K4" contestants Honey-G.

The first 30 seconds of the video features simple but effective animation that recalls the brilliant art direction of classic Gorillaz music videos like "Clint Eastwood."

And although the three members of Honey-G, Kwon Tae Hyun, Bae Jae Hyun and Park Ji Yong, then transform from cartoon into human form, the video maintains the feeling of a cartoon come to life, complete with dancing panda bears.

And there in the middle of it all, is Lee Hyori.

The soon-to-be-married Beyonce of South Korea is as perfect as a cartoon hero in "My Love" as she was in her own video for "Bad Girls."

Stan Lee are you listening?

Spoiler alert: while in the beginning of the video she appears to be a helpless prisoner, Lee turns out to have supernatural powers as she blows up her prison cell with her mind, grabs a couple of guns and generally looks like a total badass.

Brad of the group Busker Busker also puts in a spirited performance as the video's villain.

And then there's the song itself.

"My Love" is no musical revelation, it has the ambience of a Menthos commercial and the hook is kind of cheesy. But it's the good kind of cheesy!

And while that might not the music review that every band is looking for, there is a lot of music that many of us hold dear--like a Huey Lewis and the News shuffle or an over-the-top Journey ballad--that fall into the category of good cheesy.

In not being afraid to release a positive, upbeat song heavy on the keyboards and slick production, Honey-G captures the true essence of the 1980s in the way many bands attempting the same feat simply do not.
