Ladies' Code Singer Sojung's Anorexia Nightmare: Why Seeing Herself On Television Caused An Eating Disorder

For many aspiring performers, the opportunity to perform on television would be a dream come true.

Yet, for Sojung of the five-member K-pop girl group Ladies' Code, the experience was when her nightmarish struggle with anorexia began.

On Tuesday's episode of the Seoul Broadcasting System program "Incarnation," Sojung opened up about how watching herself on the Mnet reality singing competition "The Voice of Korea" sent the 20-year-old singer into a tailspin.

"Up until my appearance on 'Voice of Korea' I've never been told that I was fat," Sojung said. "But when I saw myself coming out on television, I was shocked. So I started dieting and ended up developing anorexia."

The Ladies' Code band member recalled the shocking details of the eating disorder that caused her to lose 24 pounds from her small frame.

"When I was on Voice of Korea, I weighed around 108 pounds," Sojung said. "Afterwards, I went as low as 84 pounds. I'm currently recovering and weigh over 88 kg."

She admitted that her version of dieting included practically abandoning food altogether.

"During my diet, I didn't eat any food," Sojung said.

"I didn't eat and just exercised. I just drank water all day, and there was a time when I ate five cherry tomatoes for two to three days...I hated that. I wanted to eat food. I even looked at my stomach and said, 'I'm not hungry. Why are you doing this?'"

The Ladies' Code singer, who says she is now eating healthy meals and well on the road to recovery, described the major toll the anorexia took on the singer.

"Because I didn't eat, my body felt like it was breaking even when I was wiping it with a towel," Sojung said.

"I also didn't get my period for over a year, so I went to the hospital and the doctors told me my body was like that of a fifth grader...my hormone levels were so low that I was like a woman going through menopause. The doctors told me that if I didn't gain over 10 pounds in body fat, things might get dangerous."

The most recent Ladies' Code single "Hate You" shot to the top of the South Korean pop charts when it was released last month.
