Angelina Jolie Movie Roles Aren’t All She’s Being Honored For; Will Add Humanitarian Oscar

Angelina Jolie’s movie roles aren’t the only things that earn the forthright star honors. The Board of Governors of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced that Angelina Jolie will be getting an honorary Academy Award for her humanitarian work.

Angelina Jolie, who won the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her breakout role in 2000’s “Girl, Interrupted,” will join Angela Lansbury, Steve Martin and costume designer Piero Tosi to receive The Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award. Oprah Winfrey received the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award in 2011

Angelina Jolie will get the honorary Oscar statuette for her work beyond the outside movie. The Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award is given "to an individual in the motion picture industry whose humanitarian efforts have brought credit to the industry."

The academy praised Angelina Jolie for "staking out a career in the nexus of entertainment and philanthropy." Angelina Jolie was singled out for being an "impassioned advocate for humanitarian causes, traveling widely to promote organizations and social justice efforts such as the Prevent Sexual Violence Initiative."

Angelina Jolie took to Twitter to thank the academy. On Thursday, Angelina Jolie tweeted, "I'm so proud to win an honorary Oscar this year with @TheAcademy, So much love & joy to u all, thank you! Congrats Martin, Lansbury, & Tosi."

Angelina Jolie got the award after the academy board of governors voted on them at a meeting on Tuesday night. The academy didn’t announce the winners until they could reach Angelina Jolie, Angela Lansbury, Steve Martin and Piero Tosi. Announcements were delayed almost 48 hours after voting. The honorary governors awards have been granted since 2009.

In a statement, Chery Boone Isaacs, the president of the Academy, said "The Governors Awards pay tribute to individuals who've made indelible contributions in their respective fields. We couldn't be more excited for this year's honorees and look forward to bringing their peers and colleagues together to celebrate their extraordinary achievements."

Angelina Jolie earned the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award for her social work. Angela Lansbury will be getting an achievement award after a career in film that has spanned seven decades. This will be Angela Lansbury’s first Academy Award after being nominated three times. Angela Lansbury was nominated for her 1944 film debut in “Gaslight” and for the movies “The Picture of Dorian Gray” and the conspiracy movie “The Manchurian Candidate,” which also starred Lawrence Harvey and Frank Sinatra.

Writer, actor, comedian and musician Steve Martin hosted the Academy Awards three times. Steve Martin was nominated for an Oscar nomination for the short film “The Absent-Minded Waiter” in 1977. Steve Martin tweeted "I'm proud to win an honorary Oscar this year. A salute to comedy and all the great people I've worked with."

Costume designer Piero Tosi is best known for his collaborations with director Luchino Visconti. Tosi has gotten five Academy Award nominations. He was nominated for an Oscar for “White Nights” and “La Cage aux Folles.

The Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award will be presented at the Academy's 5th Annual Governors Awards on Saturday, November 16.
