Scarlett Johansson drove around Glasgow for a few weeks hitting on random men. How did the tabloids miss that?

Sure, Scarlett Johansson was doing it for her role in her new movie, “Under the Skin,” where she plays an alien who has some kind of mind control powers or sexual powers, but really, how come it never got reported? Were all the tabloids asleep on the job or are the men of Glasgow just gentlemen? They don’t kiss and tell. Or does Scarlett Johansson really have these powers and the men never let on.

Scarlett Johansson drove around Glasgow, Scotland, wearing a dark wig, a fur coat, and some hooker-red lipstick for a few weeks in 2011 looking for random men, real people, not actors, to have sex with. The men who Scarlett Johansson hit on had no idea it was Scarlett Johansson, THE Scarlett Johansson, they also didn’t know they were being filmed.

At the premiere of “Under Your Skin” last night at the Toronto Film Festival, Scarlett Johansson said, “It was really terrifying, actually. There’s that feeling of knowing something that nobody else does — or only a select few — and not being able to control the situation at all. The challenge was letting go of those fears to, as we say, 'drive it like ya own it.' Because otherwise, it didn't work. It had to be done with total commitment.”

Scarlett Johansson plays an alien looking for human prey. A lot of the movie does take place between the worlds of earth and Scarlett Johansson’s planet. The actress improvised her way through most of the film. Driving around Glasgow in a van and teasing men.

“Under Your Skin’s” director, Jonathan Glazer, who also made “Sexy Beast” with Ben Kingsley and “Birth” said “The van that Scarlett drives, she's really driving. She's got my voice in an earwig and I'm in the back of the car with the director of photography and the first assistant director and the sound man.”

Scarlett Johansson agreed, “I couldn't hear anything he said to me, by the way.”

Glazer admitted “Thank God for that.”

Johansson said it took a while to warm up to the seduction scenes. “I have a theory that Jonathan did as many takes as possible until I was too exhausted to think about it. We knew where we needed to go, but we didn't always know how to get there, and that just took a lot of tries. And through that process of repetition, I think sometimes I would be too exhausted to have any other thought but, How the fuck can I get what I need? I wanna go home! And it was in that moment that Jonathan would go, 'Great, we got it.'”

Scarlett Johansson had to get used to so much time acting while naked, she said “I'm not a nudist by trade, contrary to popular belief. The idea of recognizing all these judgments that I place on myself and letting go of them was sort of a therapy. Just knowing that Jonathan wasn't judging me physically at all and wasn't looking for any kind of physical flaw — that he was looking for something in the performance — gave me the courage to do that. If I didn't feel judged by anybody else, I was only judging myself, so I just needed to let go of it.”

“Under the Skin” offers more than just the beautiful Scarlett Johansson. It delivers thrills and chills. Johansson said “The fact that there were all these unknowns was something I thought would be a real adventure. We just kind of put the trust in each other and jumped off the cliff together, holding hands.”
