The Rumors Are True! 'Star Diving Show Splash' Cancelled After Injuries Plague First 4 Episodes

If the idea of a show where celebrities attempt to perform diving stunts sounds a bit dangerous to you, then you would be right.

Executives from the South Korean television network Munhwa Broadcasting Corporation (MBC) announced on Thursday that they have decided to pull the controversial reality show "Star Diving Show Splash" from their broadcast schedule, after airing just four episodes of the program, over questions about the show's safety.

"What we've recorded so far will be broadcasted in the fourth episode," the MBC execs told the publication eNEWS in an official statement.

"We have not decided what program will follow after the Chuseok holiday specials are done. It will be one of the pilots that were being prepared."

The decision to end the show comes after comedian Lee Bong Won suffered an orbital fracture after his face hit the water during a dive while filming an episode of "Star Diving Show Splash," at South Korea's Goyang Gymnasium last week.

Lee's injury will reportedly take a month to heal.

"Lee Bong Won injured his face while diving and has severe swelling around his eyes. There were no permanent marks on his face or damage to his eyesight," an MBC network representative told the website allkpop on September 5.

"We are currently discussing the possibility of him leaving the program. We consider his health as first priority."

And Lee wasn't the only star to become injured because of a "Star Diving Show Splash," appearance.

Television personality Sam Hammington injured his neck while practicing for an episode of the show.

Based on a popular Dutch television program, "Star Diving Show Splash," featured celebrity guests performing high dive tricks.

Cast members were to include K-pop stars Minho of SHINee, Gongchan of B1A4, Soyou of SISTAR and Tao of EXO, according to the publication TENASIA.

Last week when Lee's injury caused a halt in production, an MBC executive denied rumors that the show's cancellation was imminent.

"'Star Diving Show Splash' did not film on the Sept. 6 like they were scheduled," the MBC exec said.

"Lee Bongwon, one of the contestants and a beloved comedian, suffered a dislocated joint during a diving practice and asked to be dropped from the program. The stoppage in filming is producing rumors of cancellation for the much-hyped show."

Yet, the network brass appeared to have had a change of heart.

On Thursday, "Star Diving Show Splash" producer Shin Jung Soo confirmed the show was over.

"We decided to cancel 'Star Diving Show Splash' after [some] discussion," Shin said.
