Review: Shades Of Michael Jackson, Pharrell, Make G-Dragon's 'I Love It' Featuring Zion.T And Boys Noize A High Point Of 'Coup D'Etat' [Audio]

Producer and pop superstar Pharrell Williams made headlines last week, when he suggested a collaboration with Big Bang frontman G-Dragon in a Twitter post.

The online shout out might have left some listeners wondering if Pharrell has heard "I Love It" the red-hot new release from G-Dragon's "Coup d'Etat" double album, from which the South Korean rapper has been releasing tracks, a few at a time, throughout the month.

"I Love It," has Pharrell's signature soul all over it.

The production is a strong nod to the modern hip-hop infused with 1960s Impressions-era R&B that was the blueprint that Pharrell's band The Neptunes rode all the way to Grammy-winning success.

There are even traces of Pharrell's two songs of the summer.

The West African-infused cowbell rhythms a-la-Marvin Gaye's "Got To Give It Up" employed on Robin Thicke's "Blurred Lines" are implied here, whether intentionally or not, as well as the Studio 54 disco rhythms of Daft Punk's "Get Lucky."

But beyond Curtis Mayfield, Marvin Gaye, or even Nile Rodgers, in G-Dragon's "I Love It," the main sonic credit on the new G-Dragon song goes to the King of Pop himself, Michael Jackson.

From the jazzy chord voicings and circular funk bass lines to the phrasing of all vocals that aren't raps, "I Love It," which debuted this week at number 13 on the Billboard K-Pop Hot 100, owes a considerable debt to the gloved one.

But whoever the influences may be on "I Love It" featuring Zion.T And Boys Noize, G-Dragon has once again shown his willingness to completely throw out the script when it comes to musical invention in the studio.

One major reason he stands out in a K-pop music landscape dominated by safe emulation, is he seems to be completely unbound by his fans expectations of who he is or what his music should sound like.

And instead of the rejection that many record labels or agents seem to think is ubiquitous with such an "insane" idea as a K-pop idol searching out new musical ground, the Big Bang frontman has found more approval than ever from his ever-increasing army of fans in South Korea and beyond.

And it seems that perhaps more than any other artist in K-pop at this moment, G-Dragon is ready for them.
