Katy Perry Roars Back at PETA Criticism of Animal Use in 'Roar' Video

Katy Perry’s “Roar” video got the notice of PETA, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, but Katy Perry is roaring back at the animal rights group with the help of the American Humane Association.

Katy Perry's "Roar" musical video shows the “I Kissed a Girl” singer swinging and dancing through a jungle filled with animal. Katy Perry makes friends with a monkey, gets a shower from an elephant, brushes the teeth of a crocodile's teeth and Katy Perry "roars" a tiger into submission. It looks like fun on screen, but PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) claims that using animals for performance in a Katy Perry music video traumatizes them.

PETA sent a letter to the Katy Perry “Roar” music video's directors and producers, protesting that they uses real animals in the clip.

In a letter obtained by The Hollywood Reporter PETA 's Merrilee Burke writes to the Katy Perry “Roar” music video crew: "What you may not know — as most people do not — is that animals used for entertainment in film and television endure horrific cruelty and suffer from extreme confinement and violent training methods.”

Burke said the Katy Perry music video set was brightly lit, had heavy equipment and crowds.

Katy Perry, who says she is an animal lover and longtime animal rights advocate, responded by getting the American Humane Association, which had oversaw the Katy Perry “Roar” music video set, to write their own letter: “American Humane Association was on set for the filming of the above referenced music video, which used an elephant, a monkey, birds and a tiger. After reviewing the reports, we believe that the Guidelines for the Safe Use of Animals in Filmed Media were followed and that no animal was harmed in the making of this music video.”
