Lauryn Hill Gets Out Of Jail; Will Be Under House Arrest; Celebrates Release With New Song

Lauren Hill was released from federal prison and will spend three months under home confinement. The Grammy-Award winning “Doo Wop” singer pled guilty to failing to pay taxes.

Lauryn Hill got out of jail on Friday and will spend the next three months under home confinement under terms of her guilty plea to failing to pay taxes.

Last year, Lauryn Hill pleaded guilty in New Jersey to failing to pay taxes on over $1.8 million that she earned from 2005 to 2007. The sentence also took into account unpaid state and federal taxes in 2008 and 2009. It was estimated that Lauryn Hill’s total earnings were $2.3 million.

Nathan Hochman, Lauryn Hill’s lawyer, said the former Fugees singer left the federal prison in Connecticut, on Friday. Lauryn Hill was sentenced in July to serve three months in prison. In an email, Hochman said "Ms. Hill was released today from federal prison after serving her sentence. She was released several days early based on a number of factors the Bureau of Prisons takes into consideration, including good behavior. She will now start today a one-year period of probation with three months of home confinement during that year."

Hochman says he hasn't had a chance to speak to Lauryn Hill since she was released.

Lauryn Hill says she will celebrate her release from prison with a new song.

Lauren Hill started singing with the Fugees when she was a teenager in the 1990s. Her first solo album, 1998’s "The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill," went multiplatinum.
In online postings and at her sentencing, Lauren Hill explained that she stopped paying taxes when she dropped out of the music business to protect herself and her children. At her sentencing in federal court in Newark in June, Hill compared her experience in the music business to slavery.

Lauryn Hill is a South Orange, New Jersey, resident and has six children.
