Diary Ng Panget: Young Filipina Author Turned Story In Best-Selling eBook, Movie Deal In The Works

Diary Ng Panget, which is directly translated as an "ugly person's diary," was a writing venture that began in 2010, San Pablo City, when the then 16 year old “Denny”, as she preferred to be called, started typing something on Candy Magazine’s online forum out of boredom. She never even had the slightest idea, not until she returned to the online forum after disdaining online games that her piece has revolutionized into a hit earning a lot of feedbacks. According to Lifestyle.inquirer.net, that certain piece of something was about the story of an attractive woman that earned too much attention from the people surrounding here –that even her slightest movements are noticed, thus considering her life as the plight of a pretty girl.

The author, Denny, was the youngest of the three siblings born in San Pablo City, Laguna. Her mother is an elderly medical aid in Imola, Italy and her father manager a resort in the Philippines. She was petitioned to join her mother and to study in Italy right after she finished high school in 2010 from San Pablo Colleges. While this young author has obviously at her peak of success, she opted to keep her identity by not giving out her real name and preferred to be called by her fans as “Denny”.

It was in 2011 while in Italy when Denny came across an online community called Wattpad and started typing whatever it is that come her mind –thus according to her made the story quite long. It was a sort of narrative structure for a girl’s diary written in conversational Filipino that talks about a not so pretty poor girl that meets a snobbish rich guy. The book mainly promotes the importance of wearing your confidence all out.

While she chose “Diary ng Panet” as the title of her story, she resort to taking “HaveYouSeenThisGirl” as her pen name whenever she writes something on Wattpad. The interesting fact about this story is that it isn’t actually about her –everything, according to her, were all made up and is inspired by those she saw in anime.

The over 12 million views can justify the claim that the DNP became a sensation in Wattpad. And it was Arnel Gabriel, publisher of PSICOM that browsed Wattpad.com and caught by the interesting title of the story. Gabriel ran through reading the entire story and thought that it would be a big catch even if only 1% from its 12 million readers will decide to purchase the book version. This idea made Gabriel to send an email to the writer to have her story published as a book. It wasn’t until two months that Denny noticed the message mixed up with the rest of the emails she received.
The young writer remembers that she couldn’t believe that she was offered such privilege that made her scream from excitement and happiness at home.

There was however a need to cut DNP into parts since it was pretty much lengthy thus having it turned out to be four volume story however keeping Denny’s idea to not make too much revisions and edits on the book. It was then published with the same original content it has on Wattpad.

Hard work and perseverance was paid since the book became topped as the number 1 Bestseller list for Philippine Publications on National Bookstore. Although her book was famed while she’s in Italy, Denny felt “it’s a little weird”.

Denny, the young author made it to having seven of her books on the best-selling ranking before she turned 20 –her books were easily sold out. She however confessed that she feels “conscious about the words and language” that she’s using on her stories as she is sensing pressure now that DNP is a success.

Although she hasn’t decided on what to do after graduating but one thing is for sure about Denny –she will continue to write.
