Bob Barker Gives $1 Million To Save Animals; Says The Price Is Right if It Rescues Elephants; `I Intend to Die Broke’

Bob Barker is an animal lover. He spent decades giving out big money prizes to people who knew the price of a refrigerator or cans of soup. Now Bob Barker is giving prizes to the animals he sees that are in danger.

Bob Barker, the former "Price is Right" host, spent almost $1 million to transport three former zoo elephants from Canada to California's Performing Animal Welfare Society (PAWS). The three African elephants, named Iringa, Thika and Toka, were living at the Toronto Zoo. They join eight other elephants that are kept on the luxurious 2,000 acres of land in Calaveras County along with tigers and other large animals that have previously been at zoos or in the circus.

Bob Barker told Fox 40 "I had a lump in my throat, I had tears in my eyes. I've discovered that the older I get, the easier I cry. The ones that were crying the most were those miserable zoo keepers in Toronto."

The 89-year-old Barker says he intends to keep giving to charities as he gets older. The game show host has always had animal safety on his mind. During his 35 years of hosting "The Price Is Right," Bob Barker would remind viewers to have their pets spayed and neutered.

Bob Barker said "I had a job that I loved... I was very well paid for it, and now I'm spending my money. I intend to die broke."

The Sacramento Bee reported that the former "Price is Right" was at the Performing Animal Welfare Society's ARK 2000 compound to see that the elephants were safe. Barker said "It was more than emotional for me, for all of us."

Ed Stewart, who co-founded the nonprofit that maintains the sanctuary, said "Our job will be to give each elephant the best care and their own time and space in which to adjust."
