K-Pop Rewind: Turbo "Twist King"

As fans of Running Man are already well aware of, muscle man Kim Jong Kook got his start in the entertainment industry as a member of K-Pop dance duo Turbo.

In the mid to late 90's, Turbo was one of the hottest musical acts in South Korea and their legacy lives on today with some very catchy tunes that fans still go crazy for nowadays.

Kim Jong Kook and joined leader and former DJ Kim Jung Nam to create the group in 1994 as a response to Deux, a popular K-Pop dance group at the time.

Mixing Kim Jung Nam's rap stylings with Kim Jong Kook's vocal abilities proved to be a winning combination for the pair as they saw immediate success after their official debut in 1995.

They earned themselves the nickname of 'dance music's scary kids' for rising to popularity so quickly.

With the first album 280km/h Speed producing three number one singles, Turbo returned a year later with "Twist King" and a second album titled New Sensation.

The title track secured Turbo's place among K-Pop's elite and swept the music charts for weeks. New Sensation sold 800,000 copies in the first two months alone, reaffirming the duo's hold on the dance music scene.

Unfortunately for fans, the pair split shortly afterwards citing problems with their management.

After countless pleas from fans, Turbo eventually returned, but without the duo's founder Kim Jung Nam who was unable to reconcile his differences with the group's agency.

Kim Jong Kook eventually returned with a new member Mikey, and the new Turbo continued riding the original success until their eventual disbandment after the fifth album in 2000.
