EV, or effort value, determines what stats your Pokemon receive upon leveling up. Beating a Patrat, for example, gives your Pokemon +1 EV in Attack. So EV training with Patrat battles means you can customize your Pokemon to have higher Attack EV than any others.

So it is not surprise that a walkthrough of strategies has surfaced on how to use horde battles in Pokemon X and Y to do EV training.

Here is a brief walkthrough of tips and tricks on EV training with horde battles.

--Using Sweet Scent or Honey ensures a horde battle will occur 100% of the time on selected routes.
--Horde battles do not activate on rainy routes.
--To defeat all the Pokemon in a horde battle at once, use moves like Surf, Parabolic Charge, and Petal Blizzard.
--Defeating the five Pokemon in a horde battle means you will receive five times the EV per battle.
--If your Pokemon is holding a Macho Brace, the amount of EV received is doubled.
--If your Pokemon is holding a power item that corresponds to the EV gained (Power Weight and HP EV gain), you receive 5 EVs per Pokemon for a total of 25 EVs.
--If your Pokemon is infected with Pokerus, all the EVs gained from battle, a power item, and the Macho Brace are doubled.
--Having the Exp. Share on will earn all Pokemon in your party EVs.
