K-Pop Crossover: Psy, Park Bom, Son Seung Yeon, And One Way, Berklee College Of Music Promotes Hallyu Wave With Korean Idol Alumnus

What do Psy, Park Bom of 2NE1, "Voice Korea" winner Son Seung Yeon, and One Way member Kim Michael Jung have in common besides being a part of the K-pop phenomenon?

One word: Berklee.

It is perhaps surprising to some, but Berklee College of Music has attracted some of the biggest K-pop idols--and rising stars--and has become an unlikely participant in promoting the K-pop movement.

One such name is perhaps the biggest international K-pop icon of the moment-Psy.

Psy attended Berklee College Music after dropping out of Boston University to pursue his passion in music. According to Boston.com, Psy took courses like ear training and harmony, as well as music synthesis and production.

Coincidentally, Psy's labelmate Park Bom of 2NE1 also studied music at Berklee, even doing so without her parents knowing due them disallowing her to pursue a career as a singer.

In the clip below taken from 2NE1 TV, Park Bom can be seen visiting Peabody, another American college institution, to show her training roots during her time abroad.

In addition, Souther Korean boy group One Way also has a member who is a Berklee College of Music alumnus. Although Chance (real name Kim Michael Jung) is currently on active hiatus from the group, his musical skills no doubt come from influences by the institution.

And just this year, "Voice Korea" winner Son Seung Yeon has decided to join the likes of Psy, Park Bom, and Chance to attend Berklee.

"Son Seung Yeon will be attending the Berklee College of Music at the end of August. She will be taking a break until next January/February until she completes a semester," says an official statement from her agency, according to AllKpop.

Whether intentional or not, Berklee College of Music has a definitive crossover with K-pop, and perhaps more and more idols will rise from its crop of young artists.
