Black Widows Grapes: Poisonous Spiders Found in Grape Packages; What To Do If There Are Spiders in Your Fruit

Black widows in grapes? American consumers in several states have reported finding deadly black widow spiders in packages of grapes. This, just weeks after Brazilian crawling spiders were found in British bananas.

Black widow spiders have been found in grape packages in Michigan, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin and Minnesota. Yvonne Duckhorn was shopping at Aldi in Milwaukee with her 4-year-old when she found a black widow spider in a container of red grapes.  Duckhorn said "I saw the legs moving frantically. I've seen bugs on fruit before, and I thought, 'That is a very big spider.' Nothing I'd ever seen before."

Duckhorn saw that the spider was black with red markings on it, the sign of a black widow spider.

Black widow spiders  can grow up to around 1.5 inches long. They are the most venomous spider in North America.

Duckhorn alerted an store workers about the black widow in the grapes. Aldi pulled all grape packages off their shelves in the Milwaukee area. In a statement the company said "At Aldi, we are committed to providing high quality products. We sincerely regret any inconvenience or concern this situation may have caused."

Yvonne Whalen bought grapes from Giant Food Stores in York, Pennsylvania, and saw a spider leg. She said "The next thing I know, there was this leg coming up over a grape and needless to say I dropped by grapes in the sink."

A black widow expert, Ryan Bridge, also said finding a black widow spider in a package of grapes is not unusual.

Coed magazine wrote steps to protect yourself if you find a spider in your fruit, "the first thing you should do is spit. Spit out whatever you have in your mouth before it bites you. Also, don't throw the bananas on the floor and run out of the house. You see, this gives the spiders the chance to hatch and get in the rug and in your clothes and hair. Your kids' clothes. Under the bed. Behind the toilet, you saw Arachnaphobia, you know what I'm talking about. You don't want that. Put the bananas in a bag or something. Flush them. Don't just throw them on the floor. If you do see any spiders on the floor. Step on them. You're bigger than they are. If you think they are venomous walking spiders, put on shoes and then step on them. Don't forget to call an attorney and sue. If you live through it. Have your kids sue if you die."
