K-pop Stars' Names and What They Mean: Female Edition

By Staff Writer | November 23, 2013 04:08 PM EST

Most of the time, female singers use their birth name as their stage names but there are the occasional exceptions like Ivy, IU, or SNSD's Sunny. Let's take a look at female singers with unique stage names and the stories behind them!

SNSD's Sunny's birth name is Lee Soon Kyu but chose the name "Sunny" to stand out amongst her 8 comrades. Plus, she's got such a "sunny" personality so it suits the singer quite well I'd say!

You probably already know this, but G.NA's American name is Gina Choi, so there you go folks!

2NE1's CL, Dara, and Minzys' stage names derive from their birth name. Dara's is Sandara, CL is formed from Chae Lin and Minzy's is spunky name out of her name, Min Ji.

IU's real name is Lee Ji Eun but the singer wanted to have a stage name for the sole purpose of privacy. Her producer came up with the name "IU" which is a combination of the words "I" and "U."
