Derrick Rose Injury Takes Him Out Indefinitely; Defensive Player Of The Year Marc Gasol Also Out; What's Next For Their Teams?

It's like a nightmare scenario playing all over again. Derrick Rose's right knee gives out and he is unable to walk.

There was no contact that led to the injury, and this is the scariest type.

Rose was not alone though. Marc Gasol of the Memphis Grizzlies is also out "indefinitely." The reigning Defensive Player of the Year left the game against the San Antonio Spurs before the first half ended.

For the verdict on Derrick Rose, here's the official statement from the Bulls page on nba.com:

"Bulls guard Derrick Rose sustained an injury to his right knee against the Portland Trail Blazers on Friday night.

Subsequent examinations and an MRI confirmed a medial meniscus tear to his right knee, which will require surgery. Rose is out indefinitely, and will not accompany the team on the rest of its current road trip."

'Indefinitely' can mean two days or two years, but the key phrase in the statement is 'require surgery.' Considering that Derrick Rose just returned from an ACL injury, Chicago might need to prepare for the worst case scenario-another season without Derrick Rose.

It's not as bleak for Marc Gasol though. From the Grizzlies page on nba.com:

"The Memphis Grizzlies announced that center Marc Gasol underwent a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), which revealed a MCL sprain in his left knee. He will be out indefinitely and no surgery will be required.

Gasol (7-1, 265), who sustained the injury in the second quarter last night against San Antonio, was evaluated at the Campbell Clinic today by team physician Dr. Fred Azar."

No surgery are the best words to hear. Depending on the severity, Marc can still return later in the season, perhaps before the year ends.

Injuries are a harsh reality of the sports world. The teams know that. However, in this extraordinary year preceding the summer, what should their teams do?

Memphis is at the crossroads, specifically in dealing with Zach Randolph. Should they trade him and blow up the core?

The bigger question is the Bulls. They were even title favorites, but without Rose, should they even try to fight or take a chance towards the future? There are too many questions marks. Luol Deng is a free agent next year and unlikely to re-sign. Boozer can be amnestied.

With Rose out, it can be understandable if the Bulls trade Deng for a future asset and amnesty Boozer. The Bulls owners are proven cheapskates, and they are unlikely to pay the stiff 'repeater tax' (which they will pay if they keep the current lineup) for a team that won't make a title run.
