Derrick Rose Out For The Season; Chicago Bulls Weigh Their Options As Backcourt Offense Runs Out

The Chicago Bulls have made it official. Yesterday, they were reportedly 'leaning' towards the major surgery that would sideline Derrick Rose for the rest of the season. Now, it is certain.

The surgery was successful. It was performed at Rush University Medical Center by Chicago Bulls head team physician Dr. Brian Cole and another team physician, Dr. Chuck Bush Joseph.

The official statement was released by Jerry Reinsdorf, chairman of the Chicago Bulls. Quoted from NBC Chiago: "Like Bulls fans everywhere, I was heartbroken when I heard of Derrick's injury. We are happy to know that, according to his doctors, his surgery was successful, and in time, Derrick is expected to make a full recovery."

"Everyone at the Bulls knows firsthand how extremely hard Derrick worked to return to the court this year, and I have no doubt he will do the same with regards to his recovery from this injury. Despite Derrick's absence, this is still a good team. I know from last year, this team and coaching staff will continue to make our fans proud."

Coach Tom Thibodeau also placed the situation in perspective. Speaking to the Chicago Tribune: "That's there. We can use that as an excuse if we choose. But no one is going to feel sorry for us. We've got enough in that room to get it done. So we've got to turn it around [Monday]. We've got to come out with and edge, we've got to be ready to play defense and rebound. That's the way we're going to win. We're capable of doing that."

While this is definitely not the end for Derrick Rose, it may be the end for these Bulls as we know it. This year's battle cry was title or bust, and with Rose out, it may be the latter. The other battle cry that they refuse to admit is "One Final Run."

Luol Deng, one of the Bulls' assets, a small forward who plays solid defense and a high basketball IQ, will become a free agent at the end of the season. He's already had brushes with management, who passed on the opportunity to offer an extension. The only reason he would stay was if they won the title and are about to defend it. That's not going to happen.

Trading Luol Deng for a future assets sounds good, and the Bulls have a good record of maximizing such deals. However, Chicago does not have any options at the guard position. Unlike last year, they had Nate Robinson. Now, with Jimmy Butler also injured, the cupboard is bare. Deng is their best trade chip, they can get a quality guard now.
