CL Of 2NE1 Explains Why Meeting Stevie Wonder At MAMA 2013 Was A Life Changing Experience

There is an old saying that you shouldn't meet your idols, because they will disappoint you.

Yet, it was apparently quite the contrary when 2NE1 frontwoman CL got the opportunity to meet music legend Stevie Wonder at Friday's 2013 Mnet Asian Music Awards (MAMA) in Hong Kong.

"I met Stevie Wonder at MAMA 2013 and had a [great talk] with him," CL said.

"He gave me many words of good advice. Listening to him, I thought that we have been using the power of music for other purposes rather than for sharing love. I reflected on myself and on that [subject], a lot."

And although it was Sistar singer Hyolyn who represented K-pop in a duet with Wonder onstage at MAMA 2013, for CL, just the experience of watching the iconic artist with 10 number one singles to his credit, was enough.

"Stevie Wonder is a person who has a great and broad-minded view of the world," CL said.

"I thought a lot of things, seeing his mind [which is clearly] beyond that of ordinary people. As a musician, having a boyfriend and relationship is very important, but I came to think that I want to use the power of music for bigger purposes, too."

"Spreading warmth to as many people as possible and making them unite is something that only music can do," she added. "I want to do such things with my music, and that is my concept of love."

CL, who performed with the Swedish electro duo Icona Pop at MAMA 2013, made the comments about the power of Wonder's performance in an interview conducted Monday at a restaurant Seoul for their record label YG Entertainment's website YG Life.

In addition to performing his 1984 hit "I Just Called To Say I Love You" with Hyolyn and Chinese pop singer Aaron Kwok, Wonder performed his classic hits "Lately" from the 1981 album "Hotter Than July," "Isn't She Lovely" from 1976's "Songs In The Key of Life" and "Superstition" from his 1972 masterpiece "Talking Book."
