iPhone 6 Rumors: Upcoming Apple Handset Allegedly Has Face Detection And Recognition Technology

There have been lots of iPhone 6 rumors showing up lately, and we can't help but wish that each and every one of them is true. There are rumors about a new mobile payment platform, better camera, faster processor, and new color variations. However, with still a month before 2013 officially ends, these chunks of news can still be considered pre-mature.

Still, there are a few iPhone 6 rumors which stand above the rest, such as the alleged face detection and recognition technology.

According to a recent report by The Epoch Times, an Apple insider has caught hold of a patent that awards the company the technology for face detection and recognition.

While these terms seem similar in meaning, they actually aren't. Face detection pertains to the ability of the rumored iPhone 6 to locate faces within a particular image. This technology has been used in camera software and modes for the past couple of years.

On the other hand, face recognition goes one step further as it pairs those faces with a particular person or user. Apple Insider says that "Typically, facial recognition follows detection".

This means Apple would be able to use this technology to further improve the security features of the iPhone. In a conceptualized scenario, the iPhone 6 receives a call and someone looks at the phone's display. If that person is unauthorized to use the phone, the device would not be able to recognize his face. As a result, the phone will still continue making the notification ringtone.

Meanwhile, if the owner himself looked at the phone, the device would recognize the face and automatically turn on the display and answer the call.

This particular example makes our knees buckle in excitement, but it seems we have to wait for almost half a year before we find out if this rumor is true.
