2PM's Taecyeon Announces Plans To Enlist In The South Korean Army In 2016

The 24-year-old K-pop singer and actor Ok Taecyeon announced on an episode of the Korean Broadcasting System television program "The Human Condition" scheduled to be broadcast on Saturday, that he has made plans to enlist in the South Korean army.

But don't worry 2PM fans, Taecyeon will not leave his band for boot camp for at least another year.

"After finishing all [of 2PM's engagements] up until the end of 2015, I will enlist in the army," he said.

All eligible males between the ages of 18 and 35 currently must enroll for between 21 and 24 months of military service in South Korea (the length of mandatory enrollment changes by several months depending on which branch of the military that they serve in).

For fans following Taecyeon's career, there were numerous indications that the 2PM singer planned to enlist. It was just a question of when.

Taecyeon, who was born in South Korea but moved to Bedford, Mass. for seven years when he was 10 years old, gave up his permanent American residence visa back in December of 2010, for the sole purpose of enlisting.

"Everyone from my parents to my fellow members and agency tried to stop me [from enlisting]," the 2PM singer told the publication Korean publication TV Daily back in 2011.

"They asked, 'why would you take the hard road when you can take the easy way?' My mind turned out this way."

Taecyeon was reportedly moved to change his immigration status in order to serve his native country after the North Korean bombardment of Yeonpyeong Island in 2010, during which the North Korean military fired on South Korean forces that had been conducting a training exercise.

Shortly following the incident, which killed four South Koreans and injured 19, the nation's President Lee Myung-bak told the Yonhap news agency that the incident was "an invasion of South Korean territory."

"After seeing such a severe national event, I began to reflect upon myself," Taecyeon explained in the 2011 interview.

The future soldier discussed his plans for corrective eye surgery in order to be able to serve in combat duty.

"Because my vision is incredibly bad, I asked [the Ministry of Defense's enlistment officers about where I could serve]," he said. "They said that if my vision doesn't get better, I would be unable to be a soldier on active duty. I plan on going after getting my vision corrected."
