Dodging the Sophomore Jinx - B.A.P

Sophomore jinx is a term used to describe a hot rookie cooling down for their sophomore year. This has not been the case for sophomore idol groups B.A.P, VIXX, and EXO. In fact, their sophomore years have been even better than their rookie year. EXO has been the dominant idol force this year, while B.A.P has heated up both the Korean and Japanese charts this year. VIXX also made a significant stride since their debut last year, holding their own in a sea of idol groups that debut and flood the market. Sure, their debut was in 2012, but these three idol groups' year was 2013.

B.A.P, Intense and Free-spirited Music

TS Entertainment, who produced and manages SECRET, released B.A.P in 2012. They were the most noticeable rookie idol group of 2012. B.A.P's leader Yong Guk was featured as a guest rapper in SECRET Song Jieun's solo debut title song, "Going Crazy ft. Bang Yong Guk". Yong Guk followed it up by performing as a duet with their youngest member Zelo with the group BANG & ZELO. They had already gained a considerable fan base, and perhaps this is why their debut as the 6-man idol group B.A.P was so well-received. Their debut tracks "Warrior", "Power", "No Mercy", and "Stop it" all entered Billboard World's top 10 charts. They also took the top spot in Germany's KPOP music chart.

Yong Guk's deep voice and Zelo's high-toned voice matches well when they are rapping. Young Jae and Dae Hyun take care of the difficult vocal parts. Take those four with the performance specialists Him Chan and Jong Up, and you get B.A.P's formula for success.

They didn't rest on their great year in 2012; instead, they went on an 8-city concert tour, "B.A.P Live on Earth" that took them all round the United States and Asia. They followed it up with their third mini-album "Badman" and took over the US and Asian iTunes charts. They were ranked 1st on Billboard World Album chart, and Germany's K-pop Chart had them in their top 20 spot for over 20 months.

They continued on their dominance, this time targeting Japan. They released a single in Japan and immediately went on a concert tour around the biggest concert stages in Japan. Their Japanese single "Warrior" debuted in October. In November, B.A.P successfully finished a tour around Japan that spanned Kobe, Nagoya, and Tokyo for a total of 6 concert performances.

B.A.P is the next Hallyu superstar.
