Reports Say North Korea Executes Uncle, Ex-Girlfriend of Kim Jong Un, 11 Others; Mystery Deepens

North Korean execution news is getting grimmer and more mysterious. According to multiple reports, North Korea executed the uncle of President Kim Jong Un, the once-powerful Jang Song Taek. There are also media reports that North Korea's leader Kim Jong Un had his ex-girlfriend and 11 others executed.

It was less than a month ago that a North Korean rebel publication wrote that North Korea executed 80 people, some for minor offenses. Jang Sung Taek is married to  Kim Kyoung-hui, she is the sister of the Kim Jong Un's father, Kim Jong Il. Kim Jong Il was the former leader of North Korea. Many believed he would not be executed for his activities because of the relationship. The execution happened five days before the second anniversary of the death of Kim Jong Il.

The state Korea Central News Agency reported that the uncle of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un was  sentenced to death and executed. Jang Sung Taek, 67, was executed just four days after being accused of "anti-state, counter-revolutionary activities." Taek was arrested at a politburo meeting of the ruling party. He was stripped of all his posts and duties. According to reports Kim Jong Un presided over the meeting that his uncle was arrested. Political experts believe this ushers in the era of Kim Jong Un.

Although Jang Sung Taek was expected to be found guilty of the charges, there was speculation that he would not be executed because of the relations. Kim Yong Hyun, a North Korea studies professor at Dongguk University told South Korean news channel YTN said "It is quite shocking, but it seems like Kim Jong Un was determined to show whoever challenges his sole leadership will be punished, without mercy."
