Google Glass Project Update: Glass App NameTag Recognizes 450K Sex Offenders; Face Recognition Software ‘Will Make Online Dating, Offline Social Interactions Safer’

Google Glass project update: NameTag, the first facial recognition software for the Google Glass, taps into the National Sex Offender Registry to provide security for Glass owners who want to stay safe, reports Venture Beat. The Glass app would know if the person you’re talking to is one of the 450,000 sex offenders in the database.

“I believe that this will make online dating and offline social interactions much safe and give us far better understanding of the people around us,” says NameTag’s creator Kevin Tussy.

“It’s much easier to meet interesting new people when we can simply look at someone, see their Facebook, review their LinkedIn page or maybe even see their dating site profile.”

Venture Beat notes that the appeal of knowing whether or not the person chatting you up in the singles’ bar is a known sex offender or not is pretty clear. But would the impact of ubiquitous face recognition technology that destroys privacy and anonymity be as appealing, Venture Beat asks. Their conclusion: Not so much.

Google has already banned facial recognition apps for Glass because of privacy and security nightmare. Technically savvy Glass owners can easily jailbreak their smart glasses and install any apps they want. The tech giant has released instructions on how to accomplish that.

According to Venture Beat, the NameTag creator says that there will be safeguards for the facial recognition software it has.

“People will soon be able to login to https://www.NameTag.ws and choose whether or not they want their name and information displayed to others. It’s not about invading anyone’s privacy; it’s about connecting people that want to be connected. We will even allow users to have one profile that is seen during business hours and another that is seen only in social situations. NameTag can make the big, anonymous world we live in as friendly as a small town.”
