Review: Yong Junhyung of BEAST's New Music Video For 'Flower' Is Edgy And Creative [VIDEO]

With holiday songs dominating the K-pop charts this month with accompanying wintry videos designed to warm the cockles of your heart, sometimes you just need to see something strange, something different, something you haven't seen before.

Sometimes you want to see your favorite K-pop star sing a song as a disembodied head.

Maybe that's not something every fan wants to see, but whatever you're looking for this Christmas season, there is no ignoring the visual innovation of BEAST singer Yong Junhyung's new music video "Flower."

Combining the startling imagery of Junhyung's severed head in a flower-filled metal box being pulled behind a truck with a rustic backwoods dance scene reminiscent of the 2EYES video "Don't Mess With Me" from earlier this year, there is no shortage of deeply affecting moments in the "Flower" video.

"Flower," which debuted at number 20 this week on the Billboard K-Pop Hot 100, also features artfully shot time-lapse photography of flowers disintegrating against melting wax and a bouquet of flowers in Junhyung's hands bursting into flames.

While the overall effect is a bit jumpy, the chaotic feel of the video sets up a visual experience that is highly unpredictable.

When the first sequence of a video shows the artist's head in a box, pretty much anything is possible.

Musically, "Flower" is a strong cut. The beat is at a satisfyingly high level in the mix.

And while the hook is reminiscent of the dramatic pop that BEAST is known for, the verses are something quite different.

They don't quite sound like rap, but the verse sections do resemble the production of more fringe hip-hop projects like Damon Albarn's Gorillaz or Santigold. There are even traces of the South Korean electronic dance group Humming Urban Stereo.

Yet there is no one sound or influence in play here. Rather, Junhyung seems determined to break away from his group both musically and visually, while expanding on the dark sound and imagery BEAST is known for.

However you feel about "Flower" as a song, there is no denying that the music video is a visually innovative piece of work.
