When summing up the 2013 music scene, three words come into mind - giants, veterans, and idols. The results of 2013 Melon Music Awards (MMA) and the 2013 Mnet Asia Music Awards (MAMA) serves as a good way to review the 2013 music scene.

Psy, G-Dragon, Girls' Generation, 2NE1 - The Giants

International singer Psy's influence was great this year. He revealed his new song "Gentleman" on April 12th at the Jamsil Stadium concert. Even though he revealed just one song, he stood out the most in Korea as well as overseas. In May "Gangnam Style" was chosen as the top streaming video at the Billboard Music Awards. It's the first time such an award was given to a Korean artist. Psy also took the number 1 spot on 6 different end of the year charts for Billboard's 2013. There's much expectation as to whether he will be able to uphold his popularity with his new songs in 2014.

Other YG Entertainment artists besides Psy were popular this year, even in America. These include artists such as Big Bang and its leader G-Dragon, and 2NE1 and its leader CL. The top 10 album sales in K-Pop are mostly filled with YG artists.

G-Dragon's official album Coup D'etat featured Missy Elliot and Baauer. It ranked on Billboard's top 200 album charts. 2NE1's CL also had a solo career, and released 3 hit songs in a row.

Girls' Generation released their song "I Got a Boy" in January, and their activities were short. Even still, their music video was chosen as one of 2013's top videos at the YouTube Music Awards.

Jo Yong Pil, Lee Seung Chul, and Shin Seung Hoon - The Veterans

In April Psy and music king Jo Yong Pil battled it out for the number 1 spot. Jo Yong Pil released his 19th album for the first time in 10 years, and his new song "Bounce" and "Hello" received a lot of love through offline sales. He sold a total of 250,000 CDs. And his song "Bounce" won the year's best song on Mnet's Asia Music Awards.

Afterwards, Lee Hyori, Lee Seung Chul, Shin Seung Hoon, and Lee Juk all had successful comebacks. Lee Hyori and Lee Juk competed with other singers their junior and won on various music programs. Lee Seung Chul and Shin Soong Hoon both received honorable titles for their successful albums, performances, and activities.

EXO, Busker Busker, and Crayon Pop - Sophomore Singer

There was no 2 year jinx for EXO or for Busker Busker this year. EXO recorded the greatest album sales record this year. EXO won a major award at both 'Melon Music Awards' and 'Mnet Asian Music Awards,' and made 2013 their year.

Busker Busker received great responses for their 1st album with the song "Cherry Blossom Ending," and there were high expectations for this year. Their 2nd album was released in late September, and the public really liked it. They won 2013's best album at the Melon Music Awards.

Crayon Pop debuted last year but they were kind of hidden from view. This year they recorded great numbers with their hit song "Bar Bar Bar." They even went into overseas music markets and held activities in foreign countries. It's widely known that they used "noise marketing" controversies to increase the group's familiarity with the public. Hopefully they will ditch other outside sources, and become well known purely by their efforts in 2014.

SISTAR Stands Tall as Mainstream Girl Group

SISTAR was one of the most active and influential girl groups in 2013. SISTAR19, SISTAR, Soyou, and Hyolyn took number 1 spots on cable as well as broadcast music programs and broke records.

SISTAR19's "Gone Not Around Any Longer" shook up the music industry in June, and SISTAR's "Give It to Me" took the number 1 spot on music programs. Soyou joined musician Mad Clown in singing "Stupid in Love," which won them the winning trophy on MBC's "Show! Music Core" in September. Hyolyn's been busy with her first solo album, and is continuing on SISTAR's popularity with her individual activities.

There's much anticipation as to whether they'll be able to be as big overseas as they are in Korea for 2014. We can only wait to see what the upcoming year has in store for them.
