NBA Player Mulls Idea Of Building Basketball Arena In Las Vegas; Is An NBA Team In The City Of Sin In The Offing?

According to popular beliefs, Las Vegas doesn't have an NBA team because: 1) it is concentrated more to gambling (which NBA is trying to stay away from) 2) it doesn't have solid fan base because most people there are tourists, and 3) it doesn't have a suitable venue.

Well, looks like the city has got a solution for the third problem. On Friday, the Associated Press reported that a former NBA player has proposed to build an arena in the City of Sin.

Former UNLV star-turned Las Vegas businessman Jackie  Robinson said that he expect the construction of a 22,000 seater stadium near the renovated SLS Las Vegas hotel-casino to begin by summer of next year. This privately-funded arena, which is expected to open by 2016, will be the second arena to be built within the city. MGM Resorts International currently has an on-going stadium project along the opposite side of the Strip.

Robinson said that this arena will be a unique one because it can accommodate different kinds of events.

"I think it's the only place that's going to have the Chicago Bears at one end and Beyonce at the other end, and an arena in both places. It's a unique place-it's not like Kansas City. It can support more than one event," said the businessman who used to play for the Seattle SuperSonics, Detroit Pistons and Chicago Bulls. In his NBA career, he averaged 3.8 points and 1.2 rebounds per contest before he tiptoed in different foreign leagues.

Robinson said he had this project planned back in 2008 but preserved the idea for a number of years due to economic reasons.

"We put everything on mothballs until things turned around," he said. "I've played in several arenas - I've been around and I understand that it has to be an experience, not just an event."

In a survey related to the Las Vegas Arena project, sorts site Bleacher Report has found out that around 79% of its readers agree that the Capital of Second Chances should now have its own NBA team.
