David Brooks' NY Times Weed Opus Triggers MSNBC's Chris Hayes To Discuss Racism Surrounding Black Weed Smokers

Recently, Chris Hayes of MSNBC used the controversy surrounding David Brooks' New York Times weed opus to discuss the racial nature of the War on Drugs.

Hayes used the time where he almost got arrested for the possession of weed as an example.

In 2000, Hayes was caught with a bag of weed in his glasses case after going through a few security checkpoints when attending the Republican National Convention with his wife and father-in-law.

Surprisingly, the security guard who caught Hayes with the bag of weed let him get away with it. Hayes suggested that the guard possibly thought he was related to a politician and was trying to avoid upsetting people of power. However, this triggered Hayes to address the racism surrounding the War on Drugs.

“I can tell you as sure as I’m sitting here before you that if I was a black kid with cornrows instead of a white kid with glasses, my ass would’ve been in the back of a squad car faster than you can say George W. Bush," said Hayes.

Hayes followed up his statement by presenting statistics that prove blacks and whites smoke weed at just about the same rate. Despite this, black weed smokers are being arrested at a much higher percentage.
