Great Expectations for 2014’s Music – Including EXO, WINNER, GOT7, Girls Generation, Big Bang

Last year EXO broke a record by being the first group in 12 years to sell over a million album copies in Korea. In just 2 years since their debut the group made this amazing record. But the music world isn't just all for the idols. Jo Yong Pil's 19th album Hello broke down all preconceived notions of today's K-Pop charts, which isn't reserved just for the young groups. So what can we look forward to in 2014?

Well, for one, the Big 3 will be battling it out.

SM Entertainment is presenting their 'pre-idols' in 2014. Since the end of last year SM has been revealing their 12 member group called SM Rookies. They've revealed 3 trainees at a time through Facebook, YouTube, and Twitter. The trainees, despite the fact that they're still waiting for their debut, already have fans. A select few of the 12 will make up a team that will have its official debut this year. Until then, the 12 members will be able to release songs and gauge individual popularities and images. It's a way for SM to simulate the team's debut. This works for SM in that they can use it as a marketing tool, as well as use this information to their benefit in planning the new team.

YG Entertainment has had a colorful year with their artists Big Bang, 2NE1, and Psy. On top of their boy group WINNER, YG Entertainment will also be debuting a girl group. Last year CEO Yang Hyun Suk himself introduced a few of the 6 members and said, "We will show you a new YG girl group that has the looks of Girls' Generation and can perform hip hop well." However, their debut was delayed.

JYP Entertainment will be debuting at least 3 groups this year: GOT7, 5Live, and a girl group with an unknown name. Since JYP's been relatively quiet for the past 2 years, it's vital that they make a big impact this year.

Idols will be making their usual comebacks as well.

TVXQ, Big Bang, and Girls' Generation are veteran groups now, and there are many other idol groups that will reach its 5 year mark. What do they have in store for us this year? Girls' Generation had a lukewarm season last year with their song "I Got a Boy." But they'll be making a comeback in 1 year at the end of this month with a new album. Big Bang released "Fantastic Baby" and "Monster" in 2012. Since then the individual members have released solo albums. However this year the group will be releasing a new album as a team. How will they use G-Dragon and Taeyang's unique images within the group? TVXQ released their 7th album Tense on the 6th.

And then there are the artists that are still bouncing.

Will Jo Yong Pil be able to release Hello 2 in 2014? An agency rep stated, "It's not the right time to reveal any plans." However Jo Yong Pil had previously revealed for his 20th album, saying that he'd start working on new songs. There's a good chance that he'll be writing his own songs for this album. We can definitely look forward to the 2nd half of the year, which is when it is likely to be released.

Not only that, Seotaiji has revealed plans to release a 9th album in mid to late 2014. What kind of music will he come out with?

Oh, and don't forget to keep an ear out for audition stars, who are rising in popularity!
