What Leeteuk Needs Now Is Not Attention But Consolation

Super Junior leader Leeteuk lost his father and grandparents all at once. Fans were even more shocked and saddened that the death was ruled a suicide, not a car accident.

Police reported Leeteuk's father killed Leeteuk's grandparents, who suffered from dementia, and then killed himself on January 7. Police found a note at the scene written by Leeteuk's father saying, "I will take care of my parents and bring them with me." This tragic news has thrust the hallyu star's family background even more into the spotlight.

Sources say Leeteuk's father had taken care of the grandparents for more than 15 years. In recent years, the grandparents started to show signs of dementia. Family members insisted Leeteuk's father suffered from depression, but the police did not find any medication in the apartment.

In the past, Leeteuk's family background received attention when Leeteuk shared about his family on the air. There is no mistaking how much of a global celebrity he is when even his family comes under fire. However, it is a grave concern that this attention might harm Leeteuk than help him. His privacy is compromised repeatedly, even during his most difficult time. Some are decrying that the media's stance, "Citizens have the right to know", is only hurting him further.

Leeteuk's entertainment agency, SM Entertainment, also asked people to respect Leeteuk's privacy and offer condolences to him and his family.

Despite this, Leeteuk's sensitive family issues continue to be revealed to the world and Leeteuk's "depressing family history" circulates in the rumor mill. It is unfortunate how someone cannot have a private life, just because he or she is a celebrity. Such a large influx of news can bring side effects, especially if it wrongfully falls on the ears of people who love to talk about other people's tragedies.

Leeteuk received the news about his family's passing while he was in the army. He headed straight for the funeral home and has remained there in mourning ever since. Though the pain of losing his father and his grandparents is great, he must return to service on January 8.

At a young age of 31, his heart now carries a deep sorrow. We need to simply see him as a man who lost his father-not a top hallyu star-and offer him our warmest consolation, not unwarranted attention.
