K-Pop Style: How Yuri Lee, Founder of Lookbook Sees It

Lookbook founder Yuri Lee has always appreciated the way fashion allows people to express themselves. And she has a unique perspective on the way k-pop groups influence style.

Following fashion blogs such as The Sartorialist, which features unique looks photographed on the street, she realized that there was a lot of fashion inspiration on the streets that was not being shared online.

"There were forums of people taking selfies and posting them online but there was not a centralized site, so I came up with the idea for Lookbook," she said.

The site was founded in 2008 and allows users from around the world to post photos with their own looks. Word quickly spread through social media and now the site has more than a million monthly visitors. On the site outfits are judged by popularity. Fans can promote or hype popular looks and follow posters. Local looks can become global and international trends are uniquely interpreted on the world's streets.

As a Korean-American Yuri Lee often returns to Korea, so she has seen both the local and global effects of K-Pop style.

"K-pop style is very influential in Korea but also influences the rest of the world," said Lee, who counts Yoghi Yammamuto and Karl Lagerfield among her favorite designers. "The style has spread beyond the boundaries of South Korea."

Having studied art history and attended a performing arts high school, Lee sees k-pop style as an intersection between art and entertainment.

"There's definitely something special about k-pop fashion and the way it pushes the boundaries of trends. It's more of an attitude than any one thing. It's not necessarily a costume but in a way it does transform the entertainer into a certain character."

Lee thinks that some of stars that most influence k-pop style are Girls Generation and BigBang.

"Girls Generation has top hits year after year and they've branched out from being singers to being actors and models," said Lee, who likes to listen to Rain, Girls Generation and Davichi. "I also think BigBang is one of the groups that has a lot of influence. As they move into their individual careers, the way they dress is attracting a lot of attention. When you look at the youtube videos, people clearly make a lot of comments on the styles and they love them. You don't really see these kinds of clothes or attitudes anywhere else."

K-pop fashion is influenced by past design trends, she says, citing G-Dragon's "Crooked" music video. And it helps create new ones.

"The video is set in the U.K. and he's got this punk vibe going on," said Lee. "He was definitely influenced by the punk movement but I'm sure that in turn people will be influenced by the video's fashion and will want to dress like G-Dragon."

Adding k-pop attitude to your wardrobe is easier than ever.

There are plenty of online resources, says Lee, and places to check it out, such as the kpopstarz fashion stories. And if you come up with an amazing look, you may want to consider posting it at https://lookbook.nu/

"It's really the ultimate form of entertainment," said Lee of k-pop fashion. "It transforms the performers and creates a different atmosphere every time they change outfits."
