Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics: Event’s Problems Most Media Don’t Show You; Athletes, Journalists And Fans Face Issues In Sanitation And Accommodation

The 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics, which will commence on February 7 in the city of Sochi in Russia, has faced a lot of troubles few weeks before it starts. Among these are the readiness of the hosts and terrorism threats from rebel groups. These problems are not yet solved 100%, with the Olympic Committee, the United States, and several European countries opting only to increase the number of their police within sports vicinities.

Aside from life threats, another problem that athletes, as well as journalists and fans, need to overcome without a choice are sanitation and accommodation.

Several journalists have cried for actions from the Olympic Committee regarding the tidiness of their rooms in Sochi.

Canadian journalist Stephen Whyno revealed that the room of his country's men's national hockey team does not look like what they expected. On his Twitter account, he posted a picture of a room with three small beds which he said wouldn't be able to accommodate their long and burly athletes.

Even Russian journalists complained about the place their athletes are going to stay in. Russian journalist Pavel Lysenkov, who was given a brief tour of the rooms, posted a video on YouTube showing Russian athletes' rooms that have only one toilet.

"Sochi? Well, three of the nine mountain hotels have not been completed, and the IOC estimate that 97 per cent of the rooms are ready appears to ignore the little things," Bruce Arthur of Canada.com wrote.

"Almost every room is missing something: lightbulbs, TVs, lamps, chairs, curtains, wifi, heat, hot water. Shower curtains are a valuable piece of the future black market here. (One American photographer was simply told, "You will not get a shower curtain.)"

Greg Wyshynski, editor of the Puck Daddy blog on Yahoo! Sports, also alerted authorities that they need signs and rules that they would understand since their rooms were filled with papers showing rules written in Russian characters.
