Maleficent movie actress Elle Fanning stars in a short film "Likeness" featuring dilemmas of people with eating disorders.

Oscar nominated cinematographer Rodrigo Prieto directs the highly awakening 8-minute film, which was inspired by his daughter Ximena Prieto, who battled with eating disorders at a young age.

The short-film "Likeness" came into reality after Prieto was approached by Rhea Scott to asked him to create a movie of with a topic of his own choosing to be featured in Candescent Films.

Almost instanty, Prieto thought of eating disorders, since his daughter Ximena, 18, did struggle with anorexia, although he wasn't sure if his daughter would be comfortable with the subject. In his delight, Ximena was enthusiastic about the project and even volunteered herself as a creative consultant.

"It is extremely hard and extremely traumatic to go through that as a family," Prieto explained to Creativity Online. "Ximena is my creative consultant on this project. This was a good opportunity to deal with it and help us understand our feelings about it."

She even appeared on the film as a friend of Mia (Maleficent movie star Elle Fanning) in the latter part of the film.

"Likeness" debuted at the Tribeca Film Festival last summer, but it made its way to the YouTube two weeks ago.

To watch a film from a perspective of a person having to deal with the horrors of eating disorder is really awakening, and according to Ximena.

"I definitely would say if someone is in the midst of dealing with an eating disorder, it's triggering. You'd have to be in a somewhat stable place to confront this emotion," she said through a phone call on Monday. "But I think it's important to face those triggering things, once you've, you know, recovered, because you can't spend the rest of your life running away."

The Prietos are hoping that the film would help carry out the message to those people who are dealing with this problem, saying that this disorders are not just about vanity. "That's part of the stigma attached to it," Rodrigo Prieto says. Ximena Prieto cuts in with the fact that people dismiss it "like it's a diet," which is certainly is not.

"What I wanted to do is represent what she's feeling and what's in her mind," Rodrigo Prieto continued. "Like Ximena says, we can't hide from these things or hide these images from young boys and girls, because they're going to find them, anyway. It's not like, OK if they don't see this short they'll be fine. I think that this short is, in the end, helpful to open the discussion for people to talk about it."
