2nd Wave Of Girl Groups, Girl’s Day & AOA Skirts Are Blowing!

The 2nd girl group era is commencing their wars. Girl's Day recently released their song "Something" and earned the title of 'music queens.' AOA, SPICA, and other 2 year girl groups are looking to participate in the music war.

Girls' Generation, KARA, and Wonder Girls debuted in 2007 and can be named as K-Pop's 1st generation of girl groups. Among these, Girls' Generation is the only group that has continued to go strong over the years, considering that KARA and Wonder Girls have fallen in popularity due to their change in members in the past.

And so girl groups that debuted in 2010 and later are looking to expand their influence.

Girl's Day and SISTAR are opening up the new era of girl groups. While most boy groups target female fans in their teens and twenties, girl group fandoms are composed of 'oppa fans' or 'uncle fans,' male fans that are older.

The February 9th broadcast of SBS "Inkigayo" had Girl's Day, AOA, and SPICA eyeing the number 1 spot on the show.

The forefront of the 2nd era of girl groups is taken by Girl's Day. The group debuted in 2010, and released their 3rd mini album Something on January 3rd to greet their 5th year in the business. They appealed to the public with their individual personalities and talents, and came out with a hit song that the public can relate to, rising in popularity. They took the winning spot on MBC's "Show! Music Core" on January 11th and on SBS' "Inkigayo" on January 12th. They again took the number 1 spot on the February 2nd broadcast of "Inkigayo", in one month since their song release, proving their popularity as a 'hot icon' in the music world.

Girl's Day agency Dream Entertainment stated, "In light of recent trends in the music industry, it's very unusual for a girl group to keep the number 1 spot for such a long period of time. Even the company is accepting this feat as an inspiring phenomenon. They've gone past just the teen fans, and captured the hearts of male and female fans of all ages. Just during the group's 'Something' activities, the fan club has grown by 10,000 members and the group boasts over 40,000 fans. Although it's normal for a male group, it's a rare phenomenon among female groups."

SISTAR, who debuted in 2010, is also standing their ground. Their songs "Alone," "Loving You," and "Give It to Me" have all been big hits. SISTAR members Hyolyn and Soyou have been busy promoting the group with their individual activities, OST releases, and collaborations. They're firmly bringing up the 2nd era of girl groups. A Pink, Dal Shabet, Hello Venus, AOA, and SPICA are doing their share as well.

AOA took their first ever win on "Inkigayo" on the 9th with their short skirts. SPICA also stood as the number 1 candidate for the first time since their debut. Although it's taken longer than boy groups, who usually rise to the top simultaneously with their new album releases, these girl groups have had a meaningful year so far.

One music source stated, "Ever since Girl's Day had a breakthrough this year, the music market has suddenly changed. It's not an overstatement that this is the launch of the 2nd era of girl groups. These sexy girl groups are appealing to the public, and are opening avenues that are different from existing girl groups."
