‘Divergent’ Movie Cast Shailene Woodley Fast Facts: Brunette Beauty Hates High Heels, Once Worked At American Apparel, And MORE!

'Divergent' movie cast member Shailene Woodley will give life to the dystopian film's heroine. Born in Simi Valley, California, the 22-year-old nearly stopped her acting dreams because of one condition.

She once battled with scoliosis.

She was 15 years old when she has been diagnosed with scoliosis. She had to do major adjustments in her lifestyle in order to realign her spine.

"When I first put on the back brace, I said, 'I can do this.' My only real issue was I needed a new wardrobe. It's like wearing a tacky, disgusting, plastic corset for 18 hours a day. In the beginning, it was hard to eat or breathe. And I had to give up cross-country running. But I needed to have it to realign my spine," she said to Us Weekly.

She used to be an employee for the American Apparel company.

While filming 'The Secret Life of the American Teenager', Woodley was likewise working as a wardrobe attendant for the American Apparel company. However, she needed to resign from her part-time job when she was enlisted to work with George Clooney in 'The Descendants'.

"I feared that day where I had to go tell my American Apparel manager that I had to quit because I booked [The Descendants]. I felt so bad," Woodley said.

She forages wild foods and even creates her own face oils.

Though she has the right to shop for glitzy things, Woodley prefers to maintain an alternative lifestyle. Most of the things that she uses are hand-made:

"I think everything about my lifestyle is fairly alternative. I gather my own spring water from mountains every month. I go to a farm to get my food. I make everything from my own toothpaste to my own body lotions and face oils. I could go on for hours," she told Flaunt.

As for her meals, she prefers a plant-based diet:  "I make my own medicines; I don't get those from doctors. I make my own cheese and forage wild foods and identify wild plants. It's an entire lifestyle. It's appealing to my soul."

She has no problem working as a nanny.

Though busy with her filming commitments, Woodley tells Elle that she's hoping to do something different with her life: "I'm so young, and I'm single, and I just want to drift. I'm just going to be a drifter. I want to do something totally different before 'Insurgent'. Maybe I'll work in a tea shop. Or live in Amsterdam. Or be a nanny. Life experience only helps us as actors. I need new experiences to draw upon."

She hates high heels and isn't a fan of red carpet affairs.

While her job as an actress gives her many opportunities to attend glamorous events, Woodley admits that she finds herself feeling awkward in high-profile celebrations.

"I don't like shoes ever and so on the red carpet, when I'm done with photos, I'll take my shoes off and do the rest of the red carpet, where you're doing face-to-face interviews where they don't see your whole body, barefoot. I think it made a lot of people feel very awkward," she said.
