Introduction to K-Pop:How FNC Entertainment Is Changing The Sound Of K-Pop

FNC Entertainment is often neglected in mention of the top K-Pop agencies. With artists such as CNBLUE and FTISLAND, FNC is amongst the most influential labels in music and Korean drama. This weekend marks two significant comebacks for FNC, with the return of FTISLAND's Lee Hongki to acting and the release of the fifth album by CNBLUE entitled Can't Stop. These recent activities follow the successful single release of Miniskirt by FNC's girl group, AOA, in January. FNC Entertainment seamlessly transitions between providing some of the best Korean pop rock entertainers, singer/songwriters, and idol actors.

In November 2013, FNC Entertainment became the focus of the humorous, semi-scripted reality program Cheongdamdong 111. Cheongdamdong 111 provided insight into the artist's interactions and training process, as well as an unprecedented look at FNC Entertainment's CEO Han Sung Ho. There are numerous similarities between Han Sung Ho and other K-Pop luminaries such as J.Y. Park (Park Jin Young), Lee Soo Man, and Yang Hyun Suk. However, Han Sung Ho is less of a household name than his contemporaries.

Although, Han Sung Ho pursued a career as a vocalist in the nineties, he has achieved greater success as both a producer and CEO of FNC Entertainment. Han Sung Ho recognized a need for bands, as opposed to idol groups, in the Korean music industry. As a producer whose primary focus is the creation of rock bands, there is an increased emphasis on musicianship. As an artist, Han Sung Ho saw his greatest recognition in the form of original soundtracks. FNC Entertainment continues to excel in the creation of original soundtracks (OSTs) with one of their most recent attributable successes being The Heirs soundtrack.

In 2007, FTISLAND (Five Treasure Island) made their debut. FTISLAND's thirteen track debut album, Cheerful Sensibility became the sixth best-selling album of 2007. The album was divided in two parts, with the second half produced by Japanese composers. In 2008, FTISLAND began to perform throughout Asia and made their debut into the Japanese market. However, the group did not see its greatest success in Japan until 2010 when the group was signed to Warner Music Japan.

One catalyst for FTISLAND's success in the Japanese market was the participation of Lee Hong Ki in the widely successful 2009 drama You're Beautiful. While Lee Hong Ki was an established member of FTISLAND, CNBLUE's Jung Yong Hwa made his debut in Korea with You're Beautiful, as the endearingly shy Kang Shin Woo. Audiences loved both the storyline of You're Beautiful, as well as the fictitious band A*N.JELL. A*N.JELL was led by actor Jang Keun Suk and also featured Park Shin Hye as nun-in-training who is catapulted into the life of a Korean idol.

In 2009, Jung Yong Hwa's band CNBLUE made their debut in Japan with the full-English album Now or Never. The move to debut CNBLUE in Japan over Korea was a daring one by FNC. Rather than debuting on a music chart show like M! Countdown, CNBLUE played before audiences in subways, small venues, and for impromptu street shows. By the time CNBLUE debuted to Korean audiences in 2010 with Bluetory, the group had endured a trial by fire. This diversity in performance experience has made CNBLUE one of the best live music acts in Korean entertainment.

FNC Entertainment currently maintains the third largest market share in Korean music, following SM Entertainment and YG Entertainment. Artists such as female singer/songwriter Juniel highlight the diversity of FNC, especially when compared against the group AOA. However, FNC Entertainment recognizes that their strongest suit has been the creation of male rock groups. Their soon-to-debut group N.Flying has demonstrated great promise. N.Flying will debut to Korean audiences in March 2014 through their upcoming reality program, which will serve as a follow up to Cheongdamdong 111. N.Flying could not have a better debut time, as CNBLUE will be heavily involved in promotional activities surrounding Can't Stop.
