12 Years A Slave Oscar Win Happened Because There’s The Word ‘Slave’ In It, American Talk Show Host Claims

Fox Searchlight Pictures' 12 Years A Slave Was big in last night's Academy Awards, taking home the Best Picture, Best Actress in a Supporting Role for Lupita Nyong'o, and Best Writing (Adapted Screenplay) for John Ridley. With these honors, the film made a milestone for the African-American community in the film industry. The film is the first ever African-American directed film to win the Academy Awards' Best Picture.

Critics lauded 12 Years for its script, cinematography, editing, and almost everything, reason why it was sensational in the Oscars. However for an American radio host, the movie, which is based on 1853 memoir of the same name by Solomon Northup who was sold and survived slavery, the Oscars are all because of hype. Its victory is somewhat because voting against it means 'racism.'

Rush Limbaugh, a conservative American radio talk show host, indicated that the word slave is already a great way to sell the film.

"It didn't matter if it was good or bad," Limbaugh said during his radio program Monday. "I haven't seen it. It was going to win. It had the magic word in the title: slave."

It is not just Limbaugh who has this kind of theory. Many right-wing writers and figures also think that 12 Years is having a success because of 'white guilt.' Before the Oscars, Breitbart's Christian Toto wrote that it is probably time to "honor a film that reminds the nation anew of its slavery sins. It's time, perhaps, for an industry which continues to struggle with diversity issues to award a film made by a black director, Steve McQueen, and starring a black actor, Chiwetel Ejiofor."

For Debbie Schlussel, an American film critic and political commentator, 12 Years a Slave is a representation of "the never-ending cries of racism that justify Obamaphones, Obamacare, welfare, minority set-asides, affirmative action, and every other form of reparations now plaguing America."
