Beatles Piano Used While Filming ‘Help!’ To Be Auctioned; Richard Lester, Director of Help, Hard Day’s Night, Parts With Beatle Piano

The Beatles piano that was used by John Lennon and Paul McCartney while filming the movie 'Help!' is set to go up for auction. Richard Lester, who directed the classic Beatle jukebox movie, "A Hard Day's Night" and the Beatles James Bond spoof film, "Help," as well as other classic films like "The Three Musketeers" and "Superman III" with Richard Pryor, is selling the Beatle Piano.

The Liverpool Echo reported that the Organizers of the Omega Auctions said the Beatle piano was owned by film director Richard Lester. It will be among the 200 lots of rare Beatles items on sale be sold in recognition of the 50th anniversary of the release of Beatles hit "Can't Buy Me Love."  The sale will be held March 20 in Liverpool, England.

According to Richard Lester, the 1907 Bechstein Concert Grand Beatle Piano was used to compose the title song to the movie Help, which began with the title "Eight Arms to Hold You."  

Richard Lester also claims that Paul McCartney used the fab piano to write the melody to the classic song "Yesterday," the most covered standard in popular music. Richard Lester says he had to threatened to ban McCartney from playing the piano during filming.

The Beatles Piano is expected to fetch around £50,000, or over $83,600.

A spokesman for Omega Auctions in Stockport said: "The piano is a fantastic piece of Beatles history. It's amazing to think that Yesterday, a song we all know and love, was written on it. It was undoubtedly been used by a number of other important stars of stage and film but most significantly it was used by Lennon and McCartney during the filming of Help!"

82-year-old Lester said: "When the film was being written under the imaginative working title 'Beatles Two', the writers and I wanted to call it 'Help'. Unfortunately, we were informed by copyright lawyers that someone else had registered that title, so Ringo helpfully offered 'Eight Arms to Hold You.'"
