Johnny Weir Sochi Olympics Experience Is Not That Good; American Figure Skater Reveals Verbal Abuse While In Russia

Johnny Weir has already retired from figure skating after fruitful years in competing in American and other international events. The 29-year old three-time U.S. national champion announced his retirement from the sport on October last year.

Despite being removed from figure skating, Weir was still one of the most visible figures in the recently-concluded 2014 Sochi Olympics in Russia. He has had many TV appearances donning striking suits and other fashionable clothes, something that is not surprising because his new profession is fashion designing.

Wier was in the country where anti-gay activities are rampant to support his compatriots and peers or flaunt his works. And his stay in Sochi wasn't that smooth. In a report by POPSUGAR, the renowned figure skater revealed that he experienced bad things in Sochi when it comes to his gender preference.

"The worst thing that would happen was I would stand to pee at a urinal in the bathroom, and I'd have my hair and my pink blazers and everything. Gentlemen would come in, and they would look at me standing to pee, walk out to make sure they were in the right door, and then have to come back in and kind of give that strange look, like, 'You're a lady. Why are you standing to pee?'"

While Weir made complaints about how he was treated in the Olympic Village, he insisted that he is not trying to stand for the LGBT community. He said that he will deal first with the problems he has in America and himself.

"I am not a politician, nor am I an activist. I like to live my life, I like to be happy, and I want my friends and family to be happy and successful. And for me, as far as activism and trying to fix something in the world? If I was to donate that time for myself to fixing anything, it would be my own situation in America. There's still a huge portion of the country I'm still not seen as an equal human to my best friend or my mother, and I think that needs to change before America can go around bossing the rest of the world around."
